Barnes
HazMat promotes Recycling as the primary method of disposal. When no
recycling options are available, Treatment or Incineration is
preferred. While Landfill is still a legal method of disposal for
many wastes, it leaves the generator vulnerable to future cleanup
costs and litigation

DISPOSAL
STRATEGY
Disposal alternatives are evaluated for compliance, cost
effectiveness and liability protection to provide the best solution
for your company’s needs. Our approach is to prepare the waste for
shipment in the most economical manner. Disposal costs can differ
greatly, depending on the form in which they’re shipped. The best
disposal pricing comes when the waste is in a form which is easiest
for the TSDF to process. |

PACKAGING/SHIPMENT METHODS
BULK Shipments via vacuum truck, roll-off bin, and IBCs (i.e. Cu. Yd.
boxes or “Totes”) provide the optimum savings. Ease of
transportation, loading/unloading, and large volumes make them easy
to process by the TSDF
DRUM Drum wastes which are comprised of liquids or solids
with no inner containers provide the best solution for medium volume
wastes. While waste can be shipped in drums from 5-55 gal. sizes,
the larger the drum, the better the pricing. Instead of shipping
multiple 5 gal. drums, consolidating the waste in larger drums will
dramatically reduce the costs.
COMMODITY (LOOSE) PACK Shipments in
drums or boxes of over packed small containers of same type wastes
(i.e. Paints, lubricants, expired products) provide the best
alternative when consolidation is impractical. Similar to “Lab
Packs”, “Loose Packs or Commodity Packs” are easier for a TSDF to
manage because they are of the same type waste and don’t require
additional inventory review and evaluation.
LAB
PACK The term
“Lab Pack” does not refer strictly to laboratory chemicals. It is a
packaging method for shipping multiple bottles of waste (<5gal.)
overpacked in a single outer container. The chemicals must be of
the same DOT hazard class and compatibility and detailed inventory
lists are required for TSDF approval. While Lab Packs are the most
costly shipment method, they provide a needed alternative when
disposing of small volumes or a wide assortment of chemicals. |

DISPOSAL FACILITIES BHM
uses only the top rated TSDFs, and screens all
disposal facilities prior to use for compliance with
permit requirements, insurance, and safe work
practices. No TSDF is ideally suited for all types
of waste, our knowledge of waste disposal methods and
procedures, enables us to direct the waste to the
facility best suited for the specific waste stream to
maximize your disposal dollar. BHM
operates independently, putting the customer’s interests
first, not the TSDF. While the selection of disposal
facilities remains the generator
responsibility, BHM provides options
to assist the generator with their selection. |

UNIVERSAL WASTE RECYCLING PROGRAM
BHM is an authorized UWSQH
for Universal wastes including lamps, batteries, dental
amalgam, mercury containing articles, and E-Waste (i.e.
computers, monitors). These low hazard materials are
hazardous wastes which have been excluded from RCRA
regulations when shipped for recycling. BHM’s
program enables the economical recycling of these wastes
through consolidation and final processing at a RCRA
permitted facility.

SCHOOL DISTRICT "CHEMICAL ROUNDUP" PROGRAM
BHM has developed a unique program to assist
school districts (K-12) with disposal of the classroom
wastes and expired or prohibited chemicals from multiple
sites. Coordinating pickups from the different schools
at the same time provides significant cost savings for
the District. Typically done on a semi-annual basis,
teachers and APs are notified via e-mail and fax of the
“Chemical Roundup” date and can set aside the items for
disposal. The program improves communication between
the district and the schools and keeps unwanted
chemicals out of the classroom. |
